One of
the most imposing memorials within Southwark Cathedral is that to the Austin
family. The name Austin is one closely associated with Southwark over the years. This
particular branch of the family was headed by a well known local lawyer and poet, William
Austin. However the memorial is centred around his wife, Joyce. Whilst they are not as
well known today as some of those remembered in the Cathedral the memorial is one of the
most important. |

As well as its imposing size, it is notable for the
fact that it was created by Nicholas Stone, a famous 17th century sculptor. Stone is most
famous for his work with the architect Inigo Jones, best known for the Banqueting House in
Whitehall. Those interested in Stone will find further examples of his work in some of the
churches in the City of London. |
